What is the method for pelvic floor muscle screening?

Postpartum women need to do regular rehabilitation exercises for their pelvic floor muscles, which is a very important task after childbirth. Every woman's pelvic floor muscles will be damaged during childbirth, but the severity of the injury varies. In order to understand the repair of the pelvic floor muscles, you need to go to the hospital for a detailed examination, such as a pelvic floor color ultrasound examination. In addition, there are the following methods for pelvic floor muscle screening.

Pelvic floor muscle screening methods:

Pelvic floor muscle examinations include rectal manometry and electromyography, which may be slightly uncomfortable but are necessary for diagnosis.

1. Rectal manometry: Rectal manometry can assess the physiological and functional status of the pelvic floor muscles and auxiliary muscle groups. Insertion of pressure sensors into the anus can quantify the tone and contraction of the pelvic floor muscles. The pressure results based on the pelvic floor muscles can identify the changes in pelvic floor muscle function and divide them into high-tension patients and low-tension patients.

2. Electromyography: Electromyography can be used to record and analyze four phases: (1) Initial baseline phase: Record for 60 seconds while the patient is at rest to determine the patient's baseline. (2) Rapid contraction phase: EMG activity is recorded when the patient performs five rapid pelvic floor muscle contractions. (3) Tension contraction and endurance phase: The pelvic floor muscles and abdominal muscles contract for 10 seconds and relax for 10 seconds for 5 consecutive cycles, and the electromyographic activity is recorded. (4) Post-resting phase: The patient contracts the pelvic floor muscles and rests again for 60 seconds to assess the final baseline.

Postpartum pelvic floor muscle examination is mainly carried out through a series of tests, such as jump test, to test the recovery of pelvic floor muscles. If urine leaks when jumping, you should consider that your pelvic floor muscles are damaged and recovering poorly.

Guidance: It is recommended not to worry too much. There are no special precautions before the examination. Just follow the doctor's instructions and cooperate accordingly during the examination. Another thing is that the pelvic floor examination is actually to check the contraction of the pregnant woman's pelvic floor muscles, that is, the muscle around the urinary tract is the pelvic floor muscle. Because after giving birth, the muscles around the buttocks of some pregnant women will relax due to excessive expansion, so the purpose is to check whether the muscles have recovered their function.
