Can I take vitamin E during pregnancy?

When preparing for pregnancy, people will become very cautious, fearing that they will consume foods that are not conducive to pregnancy, which will make it difficult for them to successfully conceive. But in fact, some tonics can still be consumed in moderation during the preparation for pregnancy, such as vitamin E. After taking this kind of tonic, the patient will feel that his body absorbs it better and increases the metabolic rate.

1. Vitamin E has anticoagulant activity. Long-term high-dose intake can increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke.

2. Low doses of vitamin E have an antioxidant effect, but high doses may no longer have antioxidant activity and vitamin E may become a pro-oxidant.

3. Taking large doses of vitamin E can hinder the absorption and function of other fat-soluble vitamins.

Instructions for use

1. Vitamin E should be stored away from light.

2. Taking vitamin E capsules can cure bleeding or excessive menstruation that occurs after some women have an IUD placed.

3. Taking more than 300 mg of vitamin E daily can reduce the body's immune function and impair the function of the body's T lymphocytes, B cells and mononuclear phagocyte system, making it prone to various diseases. The Netherlands conducted a two-year survey in which researchers divided more than 600 healthy elderly people over the age of 60 into two groups. One group took vitamin E, and the other group took placebos or sugar pills. During the study period, the incidence rates of respiratory infections in the two groups of elderly people were 68% and 67% respectively.

Among them, the elderly who took vitamin E were ill for about 19 days, with fever accounting for 37%, and more and more severe symptoms of infection. The elderly who took placebo or sugar pills suffered from illness for about 14 days, with fever accounting for 25%. This shows that elderly people who take vitamin E are more likely to develop fever, have a longer and more severe course of illness when they suffer from respiratory infections.

4. Taking more than 400 mg of vitamin E daily can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, blurred vision, excessive menstruation or amenorrhea, and even thrombophlebitis and pulmonary embolism due to platelet aggregation. This is especially important for the elderly, because pulmonary embolism can cause edema and atelectasis in the area near the embolism, affecting the diffusion function and reducing the arterial oxygen partial pressure. This is especially important for the elderly who have cor pulmonale or abnormal pulmonary vascular resistance before the embolism. A small amount of embolism can cause pulmonary hypertension, followed by complications such as heart failure.

5. Take more than 800 mg of vitamin E daily for 3 consecutive weeks. Creatinuria and increased serum creatine kinase activity will occur, which can aggravate diseases such as hypertension, angina pectoris, and diabetes.

6. Reproductive dysfunction may occur when taking 2000-12000 mg of vitamin E daily.

It can be seen from this that although vitamin E is one of the essential nutrients for sustaining life, long-term use still needs to be under the guidance of a doctor or nutritionist to minimize toxic side effects.
