How to treat mumps in pregnant women?

Mumps is an infectious disease that requires strengthened prevention not only among adolescents and children, but also among pregnant women. Pregnant women are a susceptible group and face great restrictions on their use of medication after contracting this disease. This is because antiviral drugs can pass through the placenta and affect the fetus, so their use should be avoided. In addition, ointments should also be banned as the ingredients in them can cause miscarriage. So how can mumps be treated in pregnant women safely and without toxic side effects?

There is no specific treatment for mumps. Usually, a combination of Chinese and Western medicine is used to prevent and treat mumps:

1. Isolate the patient and let him rest in bed until the swelling of the parotid gland completely subsides to reduce the risk of complications to other organs. Pay attention to oral hygiene, eat a light diet, preferably liquid or soft food, avoid chewing, and avoid acidic and spicy foods.

2. Local irradiation with helium-neon laser can relieve local swelling and pain and shorten the swelling time. Interferon has a certain effect on viruses and can be tried.

3. Take heat-clearing and detoxifying agents such as Isatis root or Yinqiao powder plus Daqingye; apply Zijinding or Qingdai powder topically several times a day; or use dandelion, Commelina, narcissus root, purslane, etc. to mash and apply externally to relieve local swelling and pain.

4. For patients with complicated orchitis, in addition to bed rest, the scrotum can be supported with a sling to reduce tension, cold compresses can be applied, and diethylstilbestrol can be used early in adult patients. Patients with complications such as meningoencephalitis, severe orchitis, and myocarditis require hospitalization.

5. Active immunization of susceptible persons can be carried out by using live attenuated mumps virus vaccine as throat spray or aerosol. Vaccination can alleviate symptoms of patients in the incubation period. Pregnant women should avoid the vaccine because of possible teratogenic effects. General immunoglobulin, adult blood or placental globulin have no effect in preventing this disease.

6. Take Chinese herbal medicine for prevention. Take 30 grams of Isatis root or 9 grams of honeysuckle decocted and taken once a day for 3-6 days.
