What does two-stage placenta mean?

What does two-stage placenta mean?

Placental grades generally refer to the maturity of the placenta. The maturity of the placenta is also very important for the child, because if the placenta develops to a certain stage, it will affect the normal development of the child, especially when it develops to level 3, it may even affect the life safety of the fetus. So, what does it mean to have two levels of placenta? Below we will introduce you to the relevant knowledge!

1. Placental maturity level 2

Generally speaking, after 36 weeks of pregnancy, the placenta reaches level 2 maturity, indicating that the placenta has begun to mature. However, the placenta can mature prematurely. If a grade 3 placenta is found before 37 weeks and combined with the value of the biparietal diameter and the estimated fetal weight of 2500 grams, precocious placenta should be considered and the possibility of intrauterine growth retardation of the fetus should be alerted.

The more mature the placenta is, the better it is. It is good to have a corresponding placental maturity according to the pregnant stage of the woman, because the placenta is the key to supplying nutrition to the fetus. A prematurely mature placenta means that the placenta ages quickly, which can easily lead to insufficient oxygen supply to the fetus and even cause delayed growth and development of the fetus. By the end of pregnancy, the placenta is basically mature.

2. What level of placental maturity is required for pregnancy

Generally, natural delivery can be successful if the placenta maturity is level 1 or 2. Placental maturity level 1 means that the placenta is basically mature, and level 2 means that the placenta is already mature. It is normal to give birth at this time. However, if the placental maturity has reached level 3, it means that the placenta has begun to age and may pose a danger to the fetus. At this time, pregnant women should follow the doctor's instructions and take appropriate measures.

3. Placenta thickness

1. The normal B-ultrasound placental thickness is 3.6-3.8 cm, generally not exceeding 5 cm.

2. The membranous placenta is characterized by a large and thin placenta, which is prone to bleeding in mid-pregnancy. If the placenta is small, it can lead to intrauterine growth retardation of the fetus and low birth weight at full term.

In fact, simply looking at the thickness of the placenta does not make much sense. As long as there are no other problems during the prenatal check-up, there is basically no need to worry.

In addition, placental thickness and placental maturity are two different concepts. If the placenta is too mature, you need to be vigilant.

The nutrients needed for fetal development are obtained through the placenta, so the function of the placenta directly affects the health of the fetus. Expectant mothers should be alert to problems such as placental insufficiency in daily life to avoid fetal malnutrition or fetal hypoxia.
