The abdominal aorta is compressed, and the pressure of the uterine artery decreases accordingly. As a result, the blood flow to the uterus and placenta is reduced, and the function of the placenta is affected, which is not conducive to the growth and development of the fetus. In addition, the supine position can also compress the ureters at the pelvic entrance, resulting in poor urine flow and reduced urine output. Sleeping on your back is also a risk factor for placental abruption in late pregnancy. Because when lying on your back, the huge uterus will compress the inferior vena cava, reducing the amount of blood returning to the heart and cardiac output, leading to hypotension. The expectant mother will experience symptoms such as dizziness, palpitations, nausea, and shortness of breath, and sometimes even pale complexion, weakness in the limbs, and cold sweats. If the above symptoms occur, you should immediately lie on your left side. Your blood pressure will gradually return to normal and the symptoms will disappear.
