Can I have a natural birth if I have too much amniotic fluid?

During the prenatal check-up in the late pregnancy, if too much amniotic fluid is found, you should be alert, because the chance of natural delivery will be relatively small if there is too much amniotic fluid. In addition, too much amniotic fluid will not only harm the fetus, but also have adverse effects on the pregnant mother. Investigations have found that too much amniotic fluid can cause a relatively high fetal mortality rate, easily lead to premature birth, and cause complications such as placental abruption.

Can I have a natural birth if I have too much amniotic fluid?

In fact, when a pregnant mother finds that she has too much amniotic fluid during prenatal check-up, she should take it seriously, because it makes it difficult to give birth naturally with too much amniotic fluid. In addition to preventing natural delivery, excessive amniotic fluid can also cause certain harm to the fetus and the expectant mother. Generally speaking, the more amniotic fluid there is, the higher the chance of fetal death. Patients with excessive amniotic fluid will also be more likely to suffer complications such as premature birth, umbilical cord prolapse, and placental abruption.

In addition, excessive amniotic fluid may also affect the expectant mother, causing her to suffer from gestational diabetes, etc. Once you suffer from gestational diabetes, it will in turn cause certain harm to the fetus. Therefore, if you find that you have too much amniotic fluid, you should go to the hospital for examination immediately.

Why is there too much amniotic fluid?

As for why there is too much amniotic fluid, there are mainly two situations. One is because the fetus is deformed, and the other is that the amniotic fluid is too much caused by gestational diabetes in the expectant mother. During the B-ultrasound examination, if there is excessive amniotic fluid, it is actually possible to detect whether the fetus has deformities, which can avoid more harm. Polyhydramnios caused by gestational diabetes can be diagnosed by doing fasting blood sugar and glucose tolerance test. However, there are some things that cannot be detected through B-ultrasound. It is necessary to determine whether there is too much amniotic fluid based on the symptoms of the expectant mother and the changes in the amniotic fluid.

What to do if there is too much amniotic fluid

So, when there is too much amniotic fluid, how do you usually deal with it? In fact, this is mainly divided into two methods: daily care and medical treatment:

1. In your daily diet, ensure a low-salt diet and reduce the amount of water you drink. Rest in bed more often, lying on your left side, to improve uterine placental circulation and prevent premature birth. The amniotic fluid index and fetal growth need to be checked every week, and expectant mothers should also count fetal movements in the late pregnancy.

2. During the remaining pregnancy, regular fetal heart monitoring and B-ultrasound examinations are required to closely monitor the growth and development of the fetus. If there is polyhydramnios and fetal malformations, the pregnancy needs to be terminated, usually by artificial rupture of membranes. If the fetus is normal, amniocentesis is needed to reduce pressure or use drugs to control it.

If the problem of excessive amniotic fluid cannot be solved before delivery, a cesarean section should be used to deliver the fetus smoothly during delivery, rather than insisting on a natural birth. In any case, when expectant mothers encounter excessive amniotic fluid, they should try to remain calm and follow the doctor's instructions.
