Why is the puppy shaking and his limbs weak? Is it normal for a puppy to lift its hind legs when running?

Many people will choose to buy a puppy and raise it from an early age. When you bring the puppy home, you may find that the puppy cannot stand or its limbs are weak and its whole body is shaking. Puppies under 6 months old usually tremble because of malnutrition and fear of the new environment. If the dog is weak and trembling for a long time, you should pay attention. What is going on?

The puppy is shaking and his limbs are weak. What's going on?

There are two types of situations in which a puppy shivers and has weak limbs: congenital and acquired.

Certain congenital diseases, such as hip dysplasia and patellar luxation (common in poodles, golden retrievers, and Labrador retrievers), can also cause dogs to lose power in their hind legs and limp. These diseases require orthopedic surgery to cure, and in some cases even surgery cannot cure them. Therefore, in foreign countries, dogs with these defective genes are required to be sterilized and cannot reproduce.

If the puppy is weaned too early, or the mother's milk does not contain enough calcium, the dog will be calcium deficient during its growth period, and will have weakness, softness, involuntary tremors, and even abnormal bone and joint development. Therefore, the owner can first supplement the dog with calcium, such as pet calcium tablets, goat milk powder, yogurt, etc. Then take the dog to bask in the soft sunlight to activate vitamin D and promote calcium absorption. If the dog's hind legs are still soft after 2-3 weeks of doing this, it may be caused by other reasons.

In addition, some diseases of the nervous system can also cause the dog's limbs to tremble and become weak. For example, encephalomyelitis and brain/spinal cord tumors. Some infectious diseases also have similar symptoms, such as canine distemper. However, if the dog's spirit, bowel movements, appetite, activity status, and body temperature are all normal, the possibility of suffering from such diseases is very low.

Is it normal for a puppy to lift his hind legs when running?

This situation is likely to be patellar dislocation or cruciate ligament laxity. In normal times, the more common dog breeds with patellar dislocation are Teddy and Poodle.

In daily breeding, if the frequency of shedding is relatively low, conservative treatment can be used. If the frequency of shedding is high, surgical treatment is the only option.

Common surgical treatments include trochlear groove deepening surgery and trochlear groove replacement surgery. Trochlear groove deepening surgery is suitable for dogs with less severe joint wear, and the cost is much cheaper than trochlear groove replacement surgery. Trochlear groove replacement surgery is suitable for dogs with severe joint wear. This disease can be checked in a professional orthopedic pet hospital in the early stage, and the earlier the treatment, the better.

In addition, calcium deficiency can also cause weak legs in puppies. In this case, the owner needs to feed the dog some food with high calcium content, such as tofu, dried shrimps, kelp, etc., or pay attention to choosing dog food containing minerals when buying dog food.

Why can't the dog stand steadily on its hind legs?

1. Arthritis or bone deformation

If you are injured or sick, see a doctor immediately.

2. Calcium deficiency

Supplement calcium in time.

3. Vaccines

Some dogs may experience unsteady walking and discomfort after receiving rabies vaccination. Be patient and wait for the symptoms to improve.

4. Congenital genetic diseases

Some dog breeds have congenital joint underdevelopment. For example, German Shepherds suffer from ataxia gait disease, cannot control and coordinate their own steps, and weak hind legs cause the tarsal joints to swing from side to side.
