Is it normal to have more vaginal discharge before and after menstruation?

Leucorrhea is a discharge from the female vagina. Abnormal leucorrhea generally indicates an infection inside the vagina, which needs to attract the attention of girls. Leucorrhea will change before and after menstruation, which is considered normal because the shedding of the endometrium during this period will cause the properties and color of the secretions to change. However, if the leucorrhea is too much or the color is too dark, pathological factors should be considered. So, is it normal to have more vaginal discharge before and after menstruation?

1. Increased vaginal discharge can be divided into two types: physiological and pathological.

1. Physiological increase in vaginal discharge: During the ovulation period every month, the secretion of estrogen in the body reaches its peak. Excessive estrogen stimulates the cervical glands to secrete more mucus, so the vaginal discharge at this time is abundant, transparent, egg white-like, sticky and can be pulled into long filaments, and the vulva feels moist. After the ovulation of the follicle, progesterone increases and inhibits the secretion of cervical mucus. At this time, the leucorrhea is less in amount and thicker. About two days before menstruation, the pelvic cavity begins to become congested and vaginal secretions begin to increase again, sometimes with a little blood in them, which indicates that menstruation is about to come.

2. Pathological increase in leucorrhea: One type is infectious factors, such as bacteria, gonococci, fungi, viruses and other infections; the other type is non-infectious factors, such as uterine fibroids, cervical erosion, the effects of some ovulation-inducing drugs, etc. These conditions can cause an increase in leucorrhea, and the leucorrhea is viscous or purulent and mucous, and sometimes accompanied by a fishy smell. In addition to increased vaginal discharge, symptoms such as vulvar itching or burning discomfort, lower abdominal or lumbosacral pain, etc., are all warning signs of possible gynecological diseases.

2. Eat low-fat and high-fiber foods. In the week before menstruation, try to eat more low-fat and high-fiber foods such as coarse grains and whole wheat. This can improve the body's nutritional balance and relieve breast pain. Supplement vitamins to lower prolactin. Prolactin can cause breast swelling. Therefore, before menstruation, you can eat more foods rich in vitamin C and B vitamins to inhibit the production of prolactin.
