Is it normal to have breast milk without being pregnant?

Everyone knows that milk is a nutritious liquid secreted by the breasts of pregnant women after giving birth. It is rich in various nutrients and is the key to the baby's growth. Children who insist on breastfeeding will have a healthier body. Generally speaking, milk will only be produced after pregnancy, but some women produce milk without being pregnant, which is very confusing. Let’s take a look at whether it is normal to have breast milk without being pregnant?

1. First: Having milk without being pregnant is a pathological phenomenon. Before figuring out why milk is produced without being pregnant, we need to first understand how milk is produced. Under normal circumstances, women will only secrete milk during childbirth and lactation. In other cases, the level of prolactin in women's bodies is very low, which can only maintain normal breast development and cannot cause milk secretion. Therefore, having milk before pregnancy is a pathological phenomenon. This is a problem with the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian axis. Simply put, there is a problem with the level of prolactin secreted by the pituitary gland, which is clinically called hyperprolactinemia.

2. Second: Hyperprolactinemia has many harmful effects and men may also be affected. In fact, in addition to the symptom of galactorrhea, hyperprolactinemia also has many accompanying harms. For example: infertility caused by hyperprolactinemia is also the most direct harm of the disease. Because prolactin acts on the pituitary gland, it inhibits the secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone. If the follicle-stimulating hormone decreases and is insufficient to mature the follicles, and at the same time, the luteinizing hormone decreases and the luteal phase cannot occur normally, it may cause anovulation and lead to infertility. In severe cases, patients with hyperprolactinemia may even experience symptoms such as amenorrhea, hair loss, weight gain, headache, and visual impairment, which should attract everyone's attention.

3. Third: Hyperprolactinemia is not a disease exclusive to women. In fact, this substance also exists in men. When the prolactin level in men is unbalanced or increases, it will also affect the levels of androgens and gonadotropins, which may lead to sexual dysfunction or infertility.
