Uterine embolization interventional procedure?

Uterine embolization intervention surgery is also called arterial embolization intervention treatment for uterine fibroids. It is a vascular intervention surgery. In life, many women experience heavy bleeding during uterine or ovarian surgery due to illness. In the past, medical technology was not well developed, and this situation generally required hysterectomy. The emergence of uterine embolization intervention surgery has allowed many women to retain the function of their uterus.

Therapeutic principles of uterine artery embolization:

(1) By utilizing the advantages of C-arm angiography, the blood supply to the uterine fibroids can be directly cut off, causing the tumor to become ischemic and necrotic, gradually shrinking and shrinking, and improving the compression symptoms caused by the fibroids occupying the space.

(2) Uterine fibroids are dependent on sex hormones, and estrogen can promote the growth of fibroids. Cutting off the blood supply to the fibroids can prevent estrogen from entering the fibroids through the blood flow. The estrogen level in the tumor will drop significantly, forming a local hormonal environment similar to that of menopause, causing the fibroids to shrink further.

(3) After uterine artery embolization, the blood supply to the uterus is significantly reduced, the growth of the endometrium is inhibited, the menstrual volume is reduced, and the menstrual period returns to normal. Anemia gradually improved and recovered.

Advantages of interventional treatment

1. The biggest advantage is that it can preserve the uterine function intact, such as normal menstruation, pregnancy and childbirth, and does not affect conception; it avoids the trauma of surgery and a series of postoperative complications, and the effect on symptom improvement is comparable to that of surgery.

2. It is easy for patients to accept because of its small trauma, quick recovery and short hospitalization time.

3. It is simpler, more economical and saves costs compared to traditional surgical treatment. Blood transfusion is usually not required.

4. Finally, the advantage of this treatment is that it leaves a lot of room for maneuver. Even if embolization fails, surgery and drug treatment can still be used. Uterine artery embolization therapy shows great potential and unique advantages in the treatment of symptomatic uterine fibroids. Compared to the tightly applied gauze and medical tape after traditional surgery, there are only three small "Band-Aids" instead. Such a small wound will certainly heal much faster than traditional surgery, and there is no need to worry about leaving long scars. The C-arm can accurately determine the shape of the aneurysm neck and its relationship with the parent artery, providing an optimal working angle for endovascular embolization therapy, which is crucial for endovascular treatment of aneurysms.
