What are the misunderstandings about maternal nutrition?

Everyone knows that a woman is extremely weak after giving birth. During the confinement period, she needs to supplement more nutrition so that her body can recover well. Diet is especially important for breastfeeding women. There are many sayings about maternal diet in our country's tradition, but many of them are incorrect, such as eating very greasy food and some supplements. Misconceptions about maternal nutrition include the following:

Myth 1: Eating more old hens can improve your health

Many elderly people will stew old hen soup for women who have just given birth, but you should know that after giving birth, especially after a caesarean section, the gastrointestinal function of the new mother is still very poor, and the old hen is too greasy, so it is not suitable for consumption immediately after giving birth. It is best to eat some semi-liquid food at this time, such as millet porridge is a good choice.

Myth 2: Drink soup immediately after giving birth in order to produce milk early

A woman has just given birth and her milk ducts are not yet unobstructed. If she drinks soup to stimulate milk secretion right after giving birth, the milk produced will be blocked in the milk ducts, which will cause the new mother to feel unwell and even have a fever in severe cases. At this time, the baby should be allowed to suck the nipple. This method can stimulate the milk ducts to become unblocked as soon as possible.

Myth 3: Eat more longan and red dates to replenish blood after childbirth

In fact, longan, red dates and red beans are all foods that promote blood circulation, not blood tonic. Eating too much of them will increase the amount of bleeding. In addition, this type of food has a high sugar content, and eating too much can easily cause tooth decay. It is recommended to eat it 2 weeks after delivery or after the lochia is clean, and it should be consumed in moderation.

Myth 4: You can’t eat fruit during the confinement period

The nutrition in fruits is relatively comprehensive. Except for the 3-4 days after delivery, you cannot eat cold fruits (such as watermelon and pears). In the days that follow, it is best to ensure 2-3 fruits per day. Some new mothers will heat the fruit before eating it, which is a very wrong practice. Heating will cause a large amount of vitamins and other nutrients in the water to be lost.

Myth 5: Ham helps heal wounds

As a pickled product, ham contains a large amount of nitrite. If a mother eats too much ham, her breast milk will contain nitrite, which is very harmful to the baby's health, so ham is not suitable for mothers.
