Why do pregnant women urinate frequently at night?

During pregnancy, expectant mothers often want to go to the toilet, and the frequency of urination increases significantly, and is often accompanied by symptoms such as urgency and pain when urinating. Pregnant women may be quite troubled by such problems, because pregnancy itself is very hard. If you urinate frequently at night, you will sleep even worse. Therefore, solving this problem is related to the health of pregnant women and babies, and cannot be ignored. If the symptoms are severe, it is recommended to seek treatment from a professional doctor.

Frequent urination has a cause

Frequent urination is the most common symptom and problem for expectant mothers. This is mainly because the gradually enlarging uterus and fetal head squeeze the bladder, making the expectant mother feel the urge to urinate, which then develops into frequent urination.

The bladder is located in front of the uterus. During the third month of pregnancy, the uterus enlarges and protrudes from the pelvic cavity. The enlarged uterus can be touched above the pubic symphysis. At this time, the enlarged uterus can stimulate the bladder in front and cause symptoms of frequent urination. In the middle stage, the uterus slowly enlarges in the abdominal cavity, and the symptoms of bladder irritation are alleviated.

After 28 weeks of pregnancy, irregular uterine contractions (hardening of the uterus) may occur normally, but there are usually no symptoms; once uterine contractions stimulate the bladder, symptoms of frequent urination may occur. If the pregnancy is not full-term and uterine contractions are frequent, you should seek medical attention promptly to prevent premature birth.

Entering the late stage of pregnancy, around 38 weeks, the fetal head descends into the pelvis, which can compress the bladder and cause symptoms of frequent urination. During the day, expectant mothers stand or sit, and the enlarged uterus compresses the large blood vessels in the abdominal cavity, causing obstruction of venous return in the lower limbs, reduced renal blood flow, and reduced daytime urine volume. Staying in bed at night reduces the pressure of the uterus on the inferior vena cava, increases renal blood flow, and increases nocturia. This is a very normal physiological phenomenon in pregnant women. However, if you experience the "three more symptoms" of excessive thirst, excessive drinking, and excessive urination accompanied by no weight gain, you should seek medical attention promptly to rule out the possibility of gestational diabetes.

If you often have frequent urination, it is recommended that you drink less water, but you can use fruit juice instead. In addition, pregnant women must go to the toilet in time when they want to, and never hold it in, as this will cause bladder infection, which is bad for the body. In addition, pregnant women are very hard-working, so they need to keep a calm mind.
