Pregnancy with Toxoplasma gondii

Pregnancy with Toxoplasma gondii

Pets are people's good friends and live under the same roof with humans. When the hostess of the house is pregnant, what should the pets do? Before pregnancy, you should have a thorough examination. Blood test is the most important step. In this way, you can know whether Toxoplasma gondii has sneaked into the body. It is more dangerous to find out that you have Toxoplasma gondii after pregnancy. Toxoplasma gondii can cause great harm to the fetus, and you need to take the next step of treatment under the doctor's advice.

1. Adults infected with Toxoplasma gondii usually do not show symptoms, sometimes only a low-grade fever and runny nose similar to the flu. However, Toxoplasma gondii can seriously harm the unborn fetus. If an expectant mother is infected with Toxoplasma gondii during pregnancy, the impact on the baby will be very bad. Animal experiments have shown that Toxoplasma gondii can cause miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal disease, or lesions and deformities of the eyes, brain, and liver after birth, such as retinitis, cataracts, brain calcification, hydrocephalus, intellectual disability, jaundice, and hepatosplenomegaly.

What to do after infection

2 Some pets that people love, such as cats and dogs, are important sources of toxoplasmosis. It is recommended that pregnant women do not keep these pets or come into contact with their excrement. Wash your hands thoroughly after processing raw meat such as pork, lamb, and beef, and make sure to cook all kinds of meat, eggs, and milk thoroughly. Do not blindly pursue the taste and avoid ingesting food containing live Toxoplasma cysts. Wash your hands before eating, and wash vegetables, fruits and melons thoroughly before eating. Women of childbearing age should undergo pathogen testing or serological tests, and those infected need to be treated for half a year before they can become pregnant again.

3. Pregnant women can transmit Toxoplasma gondii to the fetus through the placenta. If a woman with toxoplasmosis has blood-borne infection during pregnancy (i.e., Toxoplasma, Oxegleria, and Toxoplasma gondii are active), the fetus will definitely be infected. 80% of all fetuses are latent chronic toxoplasmosis patients and carry the disease for life. Another part of them develop a multi-morbid constitution, which are actually patients with multi-morbid toxoplasmosis. A very small number of them become stillborn, deformed, or mentally retarded. During breastfeeding, the baby becomes "immune to the disease", so even if Toxoplasma gondii is present in breast milk, the baby will not be in danger. The baby will be vaccinated with a live vaccine every time the baby is fed. The baby can develop and grow normally. But the symptoms vary in severity. In women with toxoplasmosis, toxoplasma activity is strongest during the menstrual period. The menstrual blood discharged by women often contains a large number of Toxoplasma cysts, which is a significant source of infection and should never be ignored.

If you have a pet at home, you need to go for a check-up before getting pregnant. This is to be responsible for the fetus. Secondly, it is best for pregnant women not to come into contact with pets after pregnancy. Pets also need to be cleaned and given injections regularly. Pets do not have to be abandoned. You can leave them at a friend's house for a while and then take them home to raise after the baby is born. Doctors never recommend that families with pregnant women keep pets.
