Causes of umbilical artery blood flow spectrum

Causes of umbilical artery blood flow spectrum

After pregnancy, female friends need to have regular prenatal examinations to ensure that the baby is healthy and well fed for a normal birth. Often in the second or early stages of pregnancy, as the fetus matures, many examination results show that the umbilical artery blood flow spectrum is abnormal. What is going on?

The umbilical artery blood flow spectrum is a color Doppler method for evaluating the umbilical artery blood flow. The ratio of the maximum blood flow velocity during systole (S) to the blood flow velocity during end diastole (D) of the umbilical artery blood flow is S/D. By observing the dynamic changes in the S/D ratio, the development of the placenta can be judged. Under normal circumstances, the placenta gradually increases in size as the fetus develops. Vascular resistance gradually decreases, and the S/D ratio gradually decreases.

Guidance:

The normal range of S/D at 24-30 weeks of pregnancy is 2.5 to 5.0, generally not exceeding 5. The current umbilical artery S/D indicates that the umbilical artery resistance is high. Common possible causes include: increased placental resistance and umbilical cord abnormalities.

Maternal and fetal blood circulation, especially umbilical artery blood flow, is closely related to fetal growth, survival status and prognosis. Measuring the S/D value can help understand the fetal oxygen supply status. It is recommended to determine whether the estriol content in pregnant women's urine is normal and evaluate placental function.

The above allows us to understand the umbilical artery blood flow spectrum. First of all, we need to check whether the child has the umbilical cord around the neck. If the umbilical cord is around the neck, don't worry too much. The fetus will rotate on its own during pregnancy, and a caesarean section can be performed if necessary.
