We know that under normal circumstances, men have more body hair than women in various parts of the body, such as the arms, calves, cheeks, back, chest, etc., except for the armpits. However, there are also quite a few female friends who may have a family history of thick hair. However, most of the heavy body hair is still related to related diseases. Below we explain some manifestations and pathologies of heavy body hair in women. Hirsutism refers to the excessive growth, coarsening, and darkening of hair in androgen-dependent areas of women. It is caused by increased androgen levels in the body or increased sensitivity of target organs to androgens due to various reasons. More than 90% of women with hirsutism have elevated androgen levels, and the rest mostly have idiopathic hirsutism. When a patient develops hair in areas where there was no hair before, it indicates the possibility of hirsutism. The presence of coarse hair on the upper back, chest, upper abdomen, suprapubic triangle, ears, and nose indicates a stronger androgenic effect. The Ferriman-Gallway hair scoring system is helpful for the diagnosis and follow-up of hirsutism. If hair appears in multiple sites, such as more than six abnormal hair-bearing sites, it indicates excessive hair. Clues to etiological diagnosis include the age of onset, the rapidity of onset and progression, the presence or absence of menstrual disorders and the degree of other masculinization symptoms. Patients with post-puberty onset, slow progression, and no menstrual and reproductive dysfunction are usually idiopathic hirsutism, and often have a family history. Patients with early onset of menstrual disorders are often ovarian diseases, the most common of which is PCOS, which manifests as obesity, infertility, oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea, acne, and hirsutism that occurs during puberty. In addition, those who develop menstrual disorders later in life are mostly suffering from adrenal diseases, among which patients with adrenal tumors have obvious masculinization symptoms; patients who have abnormal primary sexual characteristics since childhood, such as clitoral hypertrophy, and abnormal sugar and salt metabolism should be suspected of congenital adrenal hyperplasia; ... those who develop obvious hirsutism and masculinization in a short period of time and progress rapidly, mostly have adrenal or ovarian tumors that produce androgens. Therefore, the main reason for the problem of heavy body hair in women is the excessive secretion of male hormones in the body. Of course, it is also caused by abnormal reproductive function. A few obese people or those with amenorrhea also have excessive body hair. In addition, there is another thing that deserves our attention. Improper use of some drugs or the side effects of the drugs themselves are also one of the influencing factors. |
