Causes of headaches before menstruation

Causes of headaches before menstruation

Menstruation is a physiological phenomenon that women must experience every month. The menstrual period will bring many unexpected physiological symptoms to women. For example, abdominal pain is one of the symptoms that most women will encounter. Some women also experience headaches before or during menstruation. What causes this? Today I will introduce to you the reasons why women experience headaches during menstruation.

Why is the menstrual cycle related to headaches? Clinical studies have shown that this may be related to changes in serum estrogen (a female hormone) concentrations. Due to the physiological characteristics of women, the concentration of estradiol in serum decreases before and after menstruation, causing intracranial and extracranial blood vessels and uterine blood vessels to be more sensitive to certain factors such as serotonin and other substances, thereby causing changes in vascular tension and causing headaches in some patients who are sensitive to this. After menstruation, the concentration of estradiol in serum returns to normal and the patient's headaches can also be relieved.

There is another possibility that estrogen (including estradiol) can stimulate the secretion of prolactin, thereby directly or indirectly stimulating the secretion of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins act on blood vessels, causing vascular contraction and dilation. This change also shows cyclical changes due to the influence of estrogen, thereby triggering headache attacks.

Of course, vertigo attacks are often related to neck movements. Medical scientists call this vertigo caused by cervical spondylosis "cervical vertigo." If an X-ray is taken, it can be found that the cervical vertebrae are deformed, the gaps between the vertebrae are narrowed, and the uncovertebral joints are significantly proliferated. The problems of weak qi and blood, poor arterial blood flow, etc. caused by menstruation may aggravate some reactions in the neck and cause headaches.

Having headaches during menstruation or before menstruation is a relatively normal physiological phenomenon. Female friends do not need to panic too much if they encounter such symptoms. If menstrual or premenstrual headaches have affected your normal life or work, the editor recommends that you go to a regular hospital to consult a professional doctor and use appropriate medication to treat it.
