What exactly is short track speed skating?

What is short track speed skating?

Short track speed skating is the abbreviation of short track speed skating. Its characteristics are short straights, sharp turns, fast competition rhythm and strong competition. Athletes need to implement tactical actions such as positioning, overtaking and sprinting during speed skating. In order to ensure safety, athletes need to wear helmets, anti-cutting clothing, anti-cutting gloves, neck guards, ankle guards, shin guards, goggles and other professional protective equipment.

The origins of short track speed skating

Short track speed skating originated in Canada, when some Canadian speed skating enthusiasts often practiced on indoor ice hockey rinks, which led to the creation of indoor speed skating competitions. In 1975, the International Skating Union established the Short Track Speed Skating Technical Committee. Since 1981, the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships have been held. In 1988, short track speed skating was listed as a demonstration event at the Calgary Winter Olympics for the first time, and in 1992, the Albertville Winter Olympics listed short track speed skating as an official competition event.

The short track speed skating competition venue area is: 30 meters × 60 meters, the circumference of the oval track is 111.12 meters, the width of the straight track is not less than 7 meters, the radius of the curve is 8 meters, and there are 7 black rubber markers on each of the curved curves at both ends. A red marker is set on the inside of the starting line to form a competitive track route. Athletes need to engage in fierce pursuit on the track.

Short track speed skating competitions are rich and varied, including men's 500m, 1000m, 1500m, and 5000m relay, and women's 500m, 1000m, 1500m, and 3000m relay + (2000m mixed relay), etc.

Compared with other skating events, athletes in short track speed skating competitions not only have to compete in speed with their strength, but also have to use personal tactics or team cooperation tactics according to the actual situation of the game to maintain the lead or overtake and strive for the final victory.

Short track speed skating has so many hidden benefits for the body

Short track speed skating is good, but these people are really not suitable

1. Patients with cardiovascular disease

High-intensity gliding puts a heavy strain on the cardiopulmonary system. Patients with heart disease and hypertension need to participate with caution and be wary of serious cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction and heart failure.

2. Patients with joint or bone diseases

In short track speed skating, the knee joints, ankle joints, etc. need to withstand greater pressure and impact. If there are problems with the joints themselves, or if there is arthritis, or old injuries (such as ligament tears, fractures) that have not fully recovered, participating in the sport may aggravate the degree of joint injury, leading to increased pain, joint dysfunction and other problems.

3. Children who are too old or whose physical development is immature

Short track speed skating is an ice sport that requires relatively strong special strength, and requires continuous and systematic specialized training to maintain special abilities and consolidate skating techniques.

The physical functions of the elderly group decline year by year, and the tolerance of bones, joints and muscles decreases. In the absence of professional guidance and scientific and systematic training, they are prone to deformed movements, accidental falls, and a series of problems such as fractures and joint injuries.

Children whose bodies are still developing should not undergo high-intensity, high-weight specialized training too early, as this will cause irreversible damage and affect their physical and mental health.
