Apply erythromycin ointment to the episiotomy wound

Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic with an antibacterial spectrum similar to that of penicillin. It has strong antibacterial effects mainly on Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, hemolytic Streptococcus infection, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Bacillus anthracis and Clostridium difficile Streptococcus. So, can pregnant women use erythromycin ointment to treat inflammation of episiotomy wounds?

The editor believes that erythromycin ointment is an anti-inflammatory drug. If the episiotomy wound is inflamed, you can apply erythromycin ointment after disinfecting it with iodine. It is recommended to keep the local environment clean and dry.

However, if you need to breast-feed, the safety of erythromycin ointment during breast-feeding has not been established, so erythromycin ointment should be used with caution. If you must use it, it is recommended to follow the doctor's advice.

In addition to anti-infection, erythromycin ointment also has the following main uses:

Mild trauma: Erythromycin ointment can be used for minor injuries, scrapes or other injuries of the human body. The general method of use is to clean and disinfect the wound, and then apply appropriate ointment to the wound, twice a day.

Minor burns and scalds: For burns and scalds of small area, you can first clean the wound with cold water, and then apply a thin layer of erythromycin ointment on the surface.

Insect bites: When the condition of insect bites is more serious, you should clean and disinfect the bitten part in time, apply appropriate amount of this plaster, rub it twice a day, and use it for 5-7 days.

Nosebleeds: The dry weather can make the originally dry nasal mucosa of some people more sensitive, so nosebleeds often occur. At this time, it is better to use erythromycin ointment to wipe the nasal septum cartilage properly, 4-5 times a day, which can disinfect, soften the nostrils, nourish the nasal mucosa, improve the extracellular fluid of the nostrils, and prevent bleeding again. Do not apply too much to prevent the plaster from flowing back into the mouth.

Angular cheilitis: Angular cheilitis is mostly caused by infection and is more common in school-age children. Bacterial angular cheilitis can be treated by applying a small amount of erythromycin ointment and taking vitamin B22.

It should be noted that there is also a solution in erythromycin ointment for periocular inflammation, the full name is erythromycin eye ointment. They contain different concentrations of erythromycin, with the cream containing 1% and the eye ointment containing 0.5%.

Although erythromycin ointment is widely used, it is ineffective against skin diseases caused by bacterial infections, such as tinea capitis, onychomycosis, tinea cruris, and tinea manuum and pedis. Erythromycin ointment sometimes also causes some side effects, such as local burning sensation, dryness, itching, erythema, and some urticaria-like reactions. If the above side effects occur, the drug should be discontinued immediately.
