Doctor: Staying up late for a long time may cause serious blinding eye diseases

In addition to causing harm to the body, staying up late too much can also aggravate eye fatigue, leading to decreased vision, worsening myopia, dry eyes, and even more serious cases, blinding eye diseases. "Looking at the phone or TV for a long time can make the sympathetic nerves very excited. In a dimly lit environment, it can cause the pupils to dilate, causing the eyeball angle to close, obstructing the circulation of aqueous humor, and increasing intraocular pressure, which can easily induce the onset of glaucoma."

Huashan, director of the Glaucoma Department of Dongguan Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Jinan University, pointed out that staying up late for a long time may induce blue eyelash syndrome, myelopathy, acute retinal necrosis and other serious blinding eye diseases. Especially for high-risk groups such as those with a family history of glaucoma, high myopia, diabetes, and middle-aged and elderly people over 40 years old, they should check their eyesight regularly and avoid excessive use of their eyes.

Glaucoma is an irreversible blinding eye disease. Regular checkups are important, such as intraocular pressure checks, because high intraocular pressure can damage the optic nerve, ultimately leading to irreversible loss of vision. Early detection and early treatment can minimize the damage to the optic nerve caused by glaucoma. Regular glaucoma checks can track the intraocular pressure and the state of the retina and optic nerve at any time to determine whether intervention is needed and the specific method of intervention, thereby grasping the overall development trend of glaucoma patients. Regarding hot issues related to the prevention and treatment of glaucoma, Director Huashan gave professional guidance:

1. Can young people also get glaucoma?

Huashan: Glaucoma is an eye disease that can occur in all age groups. In terms of the probability of glaucoma, it may occur more in the middle-aged and elderly population over 40 years old, but it does not mean that young people have no relationship with glaucoma. At present, young people have greater work and life pressures, coupled with bad eye habits, the incidence of glaucoma is also on the rise.

2. What bad eye habits may trigger an acute attack of glaucoma?

Huashan: In daily life, staying up late or turning off the lights in a dark environment to look at the phone, looking down at the phone for a long time, suddenly drinking too much water in a short period of time, and being emotionally excited may all trigger an acute attack of glaucoma.

3. Be alert to the early symptoms of glaucoma!

Huashan: Some patients will experience eye swelling, headache, nausea and vomiting, sharp decline in vision, and rainbow halos when looking at lights, but most glaucoma patients do not have the above symptoms in the early stages. The vision of some patients also declines slowly, which is often discovered accidentally during the doctor's examination. However, glaucoma may lead to irreversible blindness, so early diagnosis and treatment are the key.

4. People who "scroll through the screen" and stay up late are being targeted by glaucoma!

Huashan: With the popularity of mobile phones and other electronic products, the incidence of myopia in China has increased year by year, and the proportion of high myopia has increased, making it a high-risk factor for young people to suffer from glaucoma. In recent years, glaucoma has gradually become younger. In addition to the great burden on the eyes caused by excessive use of the eyes, factors such as the accelerated pace of life, high pressure, and emotional fluctuations can easily cause eye fatigue and increase the possibility of glaucoma. "

5. Will glaucoma be passed on to children?

Huashan: The causes of glaucoma are complicated, and there are many types of inheritance. For example, if parents have glaucoma, their children may not necessarily have glaucoma, but there is a certain proportion of inheritance, and it may even be inherited from one generation to another or several generations. In addition, some glaucoma is sporadic. In terms of hereditary glaucoma, if one generation of parents has glaucoma, the possibility of their children suffering from glaucoma will be greater than that of ordinary people. For primary glaucoma, the depth of the anterior chamber, the width of the chamber angle, and the length of the eye axis may all be factors that are passed on to the next generation to cause glaucoma.
