Learn about glaucoma in 3 minutes: Early detection and early treatment are important

In this age where people are always using their mobile phones and computers, the use of eyes is high, and eye health is facing great challenges. Glaucoma is currently the world's leading irreversible blinding eye disease, and it can occur in people of any age. Its damage is mainly manifested in damage to the optic nerve, just like an electric wire, once it is broken, it is broken and can never be connected again.

Li Fuhua, director of Tianjin University Aier Eye Hospital, said that glaucoma, like hypertension and diabetes, is a lifelong disease that usually develops gradually. It develops very slowly in the early stages and is easily overlooked. If it is not controlled and treated in time, visual field loss and blindness will occur in the middle and late stages of the disease.

What are the common treatments for glaucoma?

Currently, there are three treatment methods for glaucoma: medication, laser, and surgery. In the early stages, it can be controlled by medication and laser treatment, while in the middle and late stages, surgical treatment is mostly required.

Common surgical treatments for glaucoma

Glaucoma surgical treatment mainly includes two categories: promoting aqueous humor drainage and reducing aqueous humor production.

Among them, the more classic ones to promote the outflow of aqueous humor include trabeculectomy, laser peripheral iridotomy, drainage valve or drainage pin implantation, and 360° viscotubule incision.

This type of surgery mainly uses physical therapy to destroy some ciliary epithelial cells, thereby reducing the production of aqueous humor. Commonly used surgical methods include ciliary cryotherapy, ciliary photocoagulation, and ultrasonic cycloplasty.

Glaucoma can cause blindness, early detection and early treatment are important

The treatment plan for glaucoma depends on the type of glaucoma, the degree of increased intraocular pressure, physical condition, etc. Experts recommend that you choose a regular ophthalmology medical institution for treatment and fully communicate with the doctor to determine the treatment plan that suits you.
