Breast cancer screening: choosing the method that's best for you

Breast cancer screening: choosing the method that's best for you

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women worldwide, and early screening for breast cancer is crucial to improving cure and survival rates. However, the choice of screening method requires comprehensive consideration based on individual circumstances and risk factors.

First of all, we need to understand the characteristics of female breasts in my country.

Compared with European and American women, Chinese women have denser breasts, which affects the sensitivity and accuracy of mammography. Therefore, mammography alone may not be suitable for breast cancer screening in Chinese women.

So, how do you choose the screening method that’s right for you?

The following are recommendations based on my country's health economics and screening practices:

High-risk groups: For high-risk groups, ultrasound combined with mammography is recommended for screening. This combined screening method can improve the detection rate and accuracy. In areas with better economic capabilities, this screening method can also be considered for general-risk groups.

Average risk group: For average risk groups, ultrasound screening alone is recommended. Ultrasound is a non-invasive, painless, radiation-free examination method with a relatively low cost.

Breast MRI screening: Although breast MRI has the highest sensitivity and specificity, it is not recommended for breast cancer screening due to high costs, long examination time, and low penetration of equipment. However, for BRCA1/2 mutation carriers, breast MRI screening can be considered based on the economic capacity of the screening area.

In short, breast cancer screening is an important health task, and it is crucial to choose a screening method that suits you. Knowing your risk factors, following your doctor's advice, and screening regularly can help detect and treat breast cancer early and improve cure and survival rates.
