Since Elon Musk 's blockbuster $ 44 billion acquisition of Twitter finally went through, his tightening grip on the social media site has received a lot of attention. However, behind the scenes, Twitter employees are also worried about their jobs. Initially, it was believed that the new CEO planned to lay off 75% of the company's workforce. According to The Washington Post, the number of employees being laid off is now at 25% ( at least in the first round of layoffs ) . As this infographic using data from SEC filings shows, by the end of 2021 , that would amount to " more than 7,500 employees , " which would equate to at least 1,875 job losses. As the chart below shows, Twitter had a noticeable reduction in headcount for many years until around 2018 when headcount began to increase and then increased significantly in 2021. A 25% layoff, if proven accurate, would reduce the headcount to around 5,600 people - roughly the number of people the company operated at in 2020 , and apparently a size Musk believes is appropriate for the future as well. This chart shows Twitter's employee headcount from 2013 to 2021. Data source: Statista.com |
