Gartner recently released a report showing that global mobile phone sales reached 425.8 million units in the first quarter of 2013, up only 0.7% year-on-year; of which smartphones reached 210 million units, up 42.9% year-on-year. Sales in the Asia-Pacific region grew most significantly, up 6.4% year-on-year, while sales in EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) fell 3.6%, North America fell 9.5%, and Latin America also lost 3.8 percentage points. Samsung remained the top mobile device maker, with sales up 13% to 100.7 million units, followed by Nokia with 63.2 million units and Apple with 38.3 million units. Samsung accounted for 30.8% of the smartphone market, Apple 18.2% and LG 4.8%. Android remains the leading smartphone operating system, accounting for 74.4%, iOS accounts for 18.2%, BlackBerry accounts for 3%, and Windows Phone accounts for 2.9%. More than 226 million mobile phones were sold in the Asia-Pacific region in the quarter, with China's mobile phone sales growing at a rate of 7.5% during the period. Its sales accounted for 25.7% of the global market, up nearly 2% year-on-year. |
