Do you know that compared to "blood pressure", intraocular pressure is more important!

Everyone knows about "blood pressure", but few people know about "intraocular pressure". Compared with "blood pressure", intraocular pressure is just as important!

What is intraocular pressure?

When people are under a lot of pressure, their eyes also feel pressure, but they cannot speak. In ophthalmology, the pressure inside the eyes is called intraocular pressure.

In terms of the structure of the eyeball, there are tissues such as aqueous humor, vitreous body, and lens, which together exert pressure on the eyeball wall and support the shape of the eyeball. Just like when gas is blown into a balloon, the balloon becomes round and full. The same is true for the eyes, but the difference is that the intraocular pressure fluctuates slightly, and the fluctuation mainly depends on the aqueous humor.

Aqueous humor is continuously produced in the eye and has the function of maintaining intraocular pressure. Normal intraocular pressure is 10mmHg-21mmHg. If the production of aqueous humor increases and the drainage channel is blocked, the aqueous humor cannot flow out, and the intraocular pressure will rise, inducing glaucoma.

The silent "eyesight killer"

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world. The intraocular pressure of patients is often higher than the tolerance of the optic nerve, which can lead to a sharp decline in vision, a narrowing of the visual field, and eventually complete blindness.

The disease develops quickly and insidiously. Many glaucoma patients suffer from migraines, nausea, vomiting, eye swelling and pain, and are often misdiagnosed as other diseases. Therefore, it is not difficult to understand why glaucoma is called the "silent killer of light."

Wu Zuohong, deputy chief physician, member of the Glaucoma Group of Hubei Ophthalmology Society, and director of the Glaucoma Department of Aier Eye Hospital Affiliated to Wuhan University (Aier Eye Hospital Group Hubei General Hospital), reminds us that vision loss is irreversible. Glaucoma may not only cause blindness, but also cause permanent and irreversible blindness. With the current medical level, glaucoma patients must be prepared for a protracted war. The damage caused by glaucoma to the eyes cannot be restored. Whether it is drugs, lasers or surgery, they can only control the disease, reduce intraocular pressure, and prevent the disease from worsening and further loss of vision.
