If you want to lose weight, can you take hypoglycemic drugs? Abusing drugs not only hurts your body, but can also make you fat.

Friends often ask Huazi, if they want to lose weight, can they take hypoglycemic drugs? Huazi's answer is that it is not recommended to use hypoglycemic drugs to lose weight. There is a Chinese saying, "All medicines are three-point poisonous." In addition to their therapeutic effects, drugs may also have the risk of adverse reactions. Only when it is clear that the benefits of treatment far outweigh the risks, is it recommended to use drugs.

Although some of the existing hypoglycemic drugs in China can cause weight loss during use, none of them have been approved for weight loss. Moreover, not all hypoglycemic drugs can cause weight loss. Some drugs may even cause weight gain, and abuse may cause harm to the body.

1. Are you really fat? Before losing weight, you must first determine whether you are really "fat". Many of Huazi's friends, especially young girls, are clamoring to lose weight regardless of their weight, but in fact many of them are not fat.

You can use your body mass index (BMI) to determine whether you are obese. BMI refers to weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared. The normal range of BIM is between 18.5 and 23.9, 24 to 27.9 is overweight, and greater than 28 is obese.

For example, if there is a person who weighs 70 kg and is 170 cm tall, the calculation formula is 70÷(1.7×1.7), and the result is a BMI of approximately 24.22, which is slightly overweight.

Many people just feel fat, but their BMI is within the normal range, so they don't need to lose weight. Even if you are overweight, controlling your diet and increasing exercise are safe ways to lose weight, and you don't need to take medicine.

2. There are risks in using hypoglycemic drugs for weight loss. Some hypoglycemic drugs can cause weight loss during use, but may cause adverse reactions and are not recommended for weight loss.

1. Metformin: Metformin is a classic drug for the treatment of diabetes. It is common for diabetic patients to lose weight during use, and is suitable for obese diabetic patients. Its mechanism may be to suppress appetite, thereby reducing the total amount of food intake; improve the insulin resistance of tissue cells, thereby reducing insulin levels and reducing fat synthesis.

However, no research has shown that metformin can reduce the weight of normal people. In addition, taking metformin may cause gastrointestinal reactions such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Long-term use will affect the absorption of vitamin B12 and may cause megaloblastic anemia.

2. Gleopold drugs: Gleopold drugs refer to sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SLGT-2) inhibitors. Their mechanism of action is to inhibit the reabsorption of glucose in the primary urine by the renal tubules, resulting in a large amount of glucose being excreted from the urine, reducing calorie absorption and leading to weight loss.

However, levitra drugs are not approved for weight loss in healthy people. During use, due to the increase in sugar content in urine, it is easy to cause infections of the urinary and reproductive systems. In addition, the probability of adverse reactions in women is higher than in men, so they are not recommended for weight loss.

3. Gliptins: Gliptins refer to dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors, which can inhibit the decomposition of incretin hormone secreted by the small intestine, inhibit appetite, reduce food intake and cause weight loss. They may cause gastrointestinal reactions such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, constipation, and may also induce nasopharyngitis and hypertension.

4. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1) agonist: refers to a synthetic analog of glucagon-like peptide-1, which can directly stimulate the GLP-1 receptor, suppress appetite, and reduce food intake. It is approved for weight loss abroad, but not in China. It needs to be injected, and nodules may appear under the skin, which can cause adverse reactions such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, dizziness, and may also cause pancreatitis.

3. Incorrect medication may cause weight gain Not all hypoglycemic drugs can reduce weight. Insulin secretagogues, insulin sensitizers and insulin itself can cause weight gain. We all know that the function of insulin is to lower blood sugar, so where does the lowered blood sugar go? It is synthesized into liver glycogen and stored in fat.

The typical symptoms of diabetes are "three mores and one less", that is, eating more, drinking more, and urinating more, but losing weight. Many diabetic patients will experience a "rapid weight loss" stage in the early stages of the disease, and then gain weight again after their blood sugar is under control. Therefore, doctors often use the weight gain of diabetic patients to determine whether hypoglycemic treatment is effective.

In summary, it is not reliable to use hypoglycemic drugs to lose weight. Although some hypoglycemic drugs can lead to weight loss, the adverse reactions of the drugs will threaten health, and if the wrong drugs are used, they may also lead to weight gain. People who want to lose weight should still achieve their goals by controlling their diet and exercising regularly. I am pharmacist Huazi, welcome to follow me and share more health knowledge.
