Is parrot fish easy to keep?

Parrot fish is one of the easier species to raise among all ornamental fish. The key to raising parrot fish is not disease, but how to preserve color and solve the problem of fighting, which are difficult to master. Another point to raise parrot fish well is to try not to mix them with other species.

How to keep parrot fish

1. Water

Parrot fish prefer soft water with weak acidity and low hardness. Because parrot fish are born with lips that cannot close, they have poor control over water flow, and the water flow through their gills is small. Their ability to exchange oxygen between water flow and gills is much worse than that of their fathers, mothers and other fish. Therefore, the water for raising parrot fish must have sufficient oxygen. It is best to equip the aquarium with biochemical filter cotton, water pump, and oxygenation aeration equipment. The specific indicators are pH value of about 6.5 and dissolved oxygen of 8 mg/L.

2. Temperature control

Parrot fish are highly adaptable to temperature and can live freely in water temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. However, parrot fish are also very sensitive to temperature. In low water temperatures or when the water temperature changes dramatically, they are prone to stress reactions, which can cause their body color to become dull and lose its bright luster, and even cause black stripes or patterns to appear. During the breeding process, it is best to keep the water temperature within the range of 25 to 28 degrees Celsius, and the temperature difference before and after each water change should not exceed 0.5 degrees Celsius.

3. Feeding and management

Parrot fish have a mixed diet, they eat almost everything, such as artificial bait, flakes, pellets, bloodworms, brine shrimp, water lice, etc., and they are quite greedy. Therefore, it is easy to keep parrot fish alive, but it is not easy to raise a parrot fish with a strong physique and bright body color. You should feed the bait regularly and quantitatively every day, reasonably match the nutrition of the bait, and regularly feed fresh shrimps and small fish. It is best to choose artificial bait specially formulated for parrot fish. This kind of feed with added astaxanthin and D-carotene is not only convenient to feed directly, but also can make the body color of parrot fish more bright and beautiful.

What to do if a parrot fish bites a parrot fish

One is to increase the density in the fish tank so that it is difficult for the fish to form an absolute advantage or disadvantage. Another is to add shelters in the fish tank to prevent the weak fish from getting hurt, but this will also cause the weak fish to be unable to eat and have limited space for activities, becoming weaker and weaker. It is not effective to remove the strong tank boss from the fish tank. Before long, a new tank boss will re-emerge in the battle.
