Do pregnant women need to fast when doing NT?

Do you need to be on an empty stomach for an NT test? Many mothers know that B-ultrasound tests need to be done on an empty stomach so that the test can be clearer. However, general NT tests do not require fasting. Expectant mothers only need to follow the doctor's instructions to complete the test.

There is no need to fast or hold urine for NT, just check the clarity of the baby's neck. NT value is the abbreviation of the thickness of the fetal nuchal translucency. During the 10th to 14th week of normal pregnancy, the thickness of the nuchal translucency increases slightly with the number of weeks of pregnancy. Any value lower than 2.5mm is considered normal, and any value greater than 2.5mm is diagnosed as thickening of the nuchal translucency. An increase in the thickness of the fetal nuchal translucency, exceeding 2mm, is considered to be associated with an increased risk of trisomy 21. Generally, there is no need to hold your urine, and it will not affect the fetus.

The fetal nuchal transparent layer is commonly known as NT, which refers to the thickness of the fluid accumulation in the subcutaneous tissue at the back of the fetal neck. Clinical trials in the past decade have found that the use of ultrasound to measure the thickness of the nuchal translucency has a very important clinical performance. The increase in the thickness is associated with a higher likelihood of fetal abnormalities. Many fetuses with thickened nuchal translucency are diagnosed with chromosomal abnormalities, anatomical abnormalities or some genetic syndromes.

It has been reported that among fetuses with thickened nuchal translucency at 10 to 14 weeks of pregnancy, about 10% have chromosomal abnormalities. Among fetuses with normal sex chromosomes and thickened lamina lucidum, about 4% to 20% have anatomical abnormalities and some genetic syndromes, especially severe heart damage. There were also cases of intrauterine fetal death and neonatal death of unknown cause (2%).

The NT test does not require fasting. The NT test is a test method that uses color ultrasound to accurately measure the thickness of the subcutaneous transparent layer of the fetal neck. Dietary factors will not affect the accuracy of the NT test results, so there is no need to fast before conducting the NT test. The time for NT examination is between the 11th week and the 13th week plus 6 days of pregnancy. During this time range, there is no need to hold urine when doing B-ultrasound examination. If the pregnant woman has not undergone systematic examinations during pregnancy, including liver and kidney function tests, blood sugar level, blood sugar, blood routine tests, etc. When doing the NT test, you may need to do these tests at the same time, and you should do it on an empty stomach. The NT test results can indicate the risk of the fetus having Down syndrome and congenital heart disease.
