Is positive urine protein in women serious?

Urine protein is a small amount of small molecule protein contained in urine. When conducting a routine urine test, the urine protein content is a very important data and has a good reference value for the diagnosis of certain diseases, such as kidney disease and some systemic diseases. When the test is positive, the patient is not very aware of the situation. So, is positive urine protein in women serious? Let’s take a look below.

The severity of weak positive urine protein in women depends on the specific cause. If it is caused by physiological factors, this situation is not serious. If it is caused by pathological factors, such as chronic nephritis, it is relatively serious.

Pathological proteinuria

When suffering from acute or chronic glomerulonephritis, acute pyelonephritis, renal congestion, hypertensive nephropathy, diabetic nephropathy and other diseases, or when the kidneys are infected with viruses, bacteria, drug poisoning, etc., the glomerular filtration membrane capacities increase and the ability of the renal tubules to reabsorb low molecular weight proteins decreases, then protein can be found in the urine.

Physiological proteinuria

Pseudoproteinuria

If female vaginal secretions contaminate urine, pseudoproteinuria may occur, so female patients need to clean the perineum before collecting urine.

Functional proteinuria

The protein content in urine is very small, and it often occurs when you have a cold or fever, work in high temperatures, are extremely cold, or are extremely excited. When the temperature slowly drops, the protein in the urine will disappear.

Orthostatic proteinuria

Urine protein is negative when lying flat, but positive when standing upright or walking. This is because the internal organs are sagging, the left renal vein is compressed, and blood return is obstructed. Ultrasound examination can be performed. It is more common in tall and thin teenagers.

Exercise-induced proteinuria

Vigorous exercise and heavy physical labor will lead to an increase in urine protein content, resulting in positive proteinuria. This situation will return to normal after rest. More common in teenagers.

Therefore, it can be seen that the presence of protein in the urine does not necessarily mean that there is a problem with the kidneys. Do not make assumptions on your own. Further examinations must be conducted, and renal puncture pathological examination may be required if necessary.
