The pros and cons of vaginal delivery

The pros and cons of vaginal delivery

There are two ways for women to give birth: natural birth and caesarean section. Most women choose natural birth, mainly because it can reduce complications caused by fetal infection to a certain extent and help women expel lochia from their bodies. However, everyone's physical condition is different, so the situation brought about by natural birth will naturally be different. So what are the advantages and disadvantages of natural birth?

Pros and cons of vaginal birth and caesarean section

Many clinical data show that the benefits of natural birth are greater than those of caesarean section, so it is recommended that expectant mothers choose natural birth instead of caesarean section. Of course, not all expectant mothers can choose to give birth naturally. Some of them do not meet the indications for natural birth and are not recommended. For example, if the fetus is in an abnormal position, the fetus is too large, or there is a difficult delivery during the natural birth, a caesarean section should be performed under the guidance of a doctor. Therefore, the choice of caesarean section or natural birth should be based on the specific circumstances.

The advantage of natural childbirth is quick recovery after delivery, and it is also very beneficial to the fetus. Studies have shown that babies born through natural childbirth are smarter than those born through caesarean section. However, natural childbirth also has its disadvantages, such as damage to the vagina, and prenatal and postpartum contractions are both considerable challenges for mothers.

The advantage of cesarean section is that it can avoid accidents such as dystocia that may occur during natural delivery, but cesarean section is not a minor surgery and the mortality rate of surgery is higher than that of natural delivery. Moreover, the wound left by a caesarean section is not just a layer on the abdomen, but also a cut on the uterus, which will have a great impact on the recovery of the mother after delivery, and the postpartum incision pain is also very severe.

Is it good to have a normal birth?

Most women prefer natural birth when giving birth, so let’s find out whether natural birth is good or not.

1. Advantages of natural childbirth

During normal delivery, the uterus dilates and contracts regularly, and the fetus's breathing can also be regular, allowing the baby to quickly adapt to the external environment when it is born. The fetus is born through the mother's birth canal, which can reduce neonatal complications. During childbirth, the mother's vagina expands greatly, which is beneficial for the discharge of lochia in the body and also for the recovery of the uterus. Some data also show that children born naturally are smarter than those born by caesarean section.

2. Disadvantages of natural childbirth

Every mother is very afraid of labor pains before childbirth, which can easily lead to sequelae of vaginal relaxation, uterine or bladder prolapse after childbirth. Normal delivery can affect the perineum, causing perineal tearing or infection, and amniotic fluid embolism can occur without warning. In severe cases, the uterus may need to be removed, and it may even be life-threatening. For the fetus, natural childbirth will exhaust all the mother's strength and easily cause the fetus's head to swell. If the fetus is too heavy or too large, it may lead to difficult labor or even an accident in the womb.
