What happens if my menstrual period lasts for a long time and I have brown discharge?

Under normal circumstances, menstruation occurs once a month and lasts no more than seven days. However, some people have long and profuse menstruation, and often have brown secretions. This is not brown secretion, but some mucus mixed with blood. In this case, we can consider it as a symptom of irregular menstruation. Generally, irregular menstruation can cause dysmenorrhea in women, less menstrual volume, longer menstruation, and often intermittent menstruation, with symptoms of profuse menstruation.

Symptoms of scanty menstruation

The symptoms of oligomenorrhea mainly include that the menstrual cycle and menstrual period of women are basically normal, but the menstrual volume is significantly reduced, with each menstrual volume being less than 20ml, or even as little as a drop. Menstruation lasting less than two days is also a sign of low menstrual flow, and in severe cases it may develop into amenorrhea. In traditional Chinese medicine, scanty menstruation is divided into four types: blood deficiency type, kidney deficiency type, blood stasis type, and phlegm-dampness type, based on the color, quality, presence or absence of abdominal pain and accompanying symptoms of menstruation.

1. Blood deficiency type: Menstrual blood is lighter in color and contains no blood clots. During menstruation, women experience symptoms such as dizziness, palpitations, weakness, yellow complexion, and a feeling of emptiness in the lower abdomen. The color of the tongue is lighter than that of normal people, and the pulse is thin and weak.

2. Kidney deficiency type: Menstrual blood is light red or even dark red, and thin in texture. Menstruation is accompanied by symptoms such as sore waist and weak knees, heel pain, dizziness, tinnitus, frequent urination at night, etc. The color of the tongue is darker than that of normal people, and the pulse is weak or slow.

3. Blood stasis type: Menstrual blood is purple-black in color and contains blood clots, often accompanied by lower abdominal distension and pain. The abdominal pain symptoms will be relieved after the blood clots are discharged. The tongue is dark purple in color or has small bruises, and the pulse is thin and astringent or stringy and astringent.

4. Phlegm-dampness type: Menstrual blood is light red in color and thick like phlegm. It is more common in obese women and is often accompanied by chest tightness and nausea. The tongue is light red with tooth marks on the edge of the tongue, the tongue coating is white and greasy, and the pulse is slippery.
