When did you discover that you had high blood pressure?

More than 10 years ago, I found that my blood pressure was abnormal during the physical examination after graduating from college, but I didn't take it seriously at that time. Later, after working for many years, I often faced symptoms of headaches and dizziness, and had to go to the hospital for emergency treatment several times.

Three months ago, my blood pressure remained above 160/120 mmHg, causing me extreme physical discomfort. This had a significant impact on my work and life. After much reflection, I decided to take a closer look.

By chance, I came to the "Middle-aged and Elderly Hypertension" clinic of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University for treatment. It was this decision that finally helped me control hypertension, the "invisible killer".

What are the misunderstandings in the treatment of hypertension?

First, they do not pay attention to adjusting their lifestyle .

for example:

Love to eat salt and processed foods, with strong taste;

Not paying attention to weight management, so that you get fatter and fatter;

High work pressure and little or no exercise.

Second, I still have some concerns about antihypertensive drugs .

I used to take blood pressure medication, but once my high blood pressure was under control, I wanted to stop taking it. I thought I was still young and it would be best if I could stop taking medication.

But now I know that it is not advisable to stop taking the medicine at will . The normal blood pressure after taking the medicine is actually the effect of the medicine, not that my hypertension has been cured. At the same time, sometimes the blood pressure may be normal 1-2 days after stopping the medicine, because the antihypertensive medicine taken before still has a certain residual effect. However, if the medicine is stopped, the blood pressure will inevitably rise again. This fluctuation in blood pressure will cause a huge challenge to the heart and brain blood vessels.

What have you gained from your three-month medical experience?

1. Accept the fact that I am a hypertensive patient : Although I got hypertension at a relatively young age, which is a bit of a loss, my parents both have hypertension, so the possibility of inheriting it is higher than others. At the same time, my lifestyle is not healthy enough, so it is not unexpected that I get hypertension.

2. Learn to live peacefully with high blood pressure: Change your lifestyle

Take antihypertensive drugs : As long as you choose the right drugs and control your blood pressure to the target level (your doctor will tell you what your blood pressure target is), the benefits of antihypertensive drugs far outweigh their side effects. As for which antihypertensive drug to choose, don't make the decision on your own. Your doctor will decide and adjust the specific drug based on your condition.

Daily blood pressure measurement : If you only take medicine without measuring, your doctor will not be able to evaluate the efficacy, so be sure to measure your blood pressure regularly. If blood pressure is not well controlled, or when you first start taking medicine or adjusting medicine, it is best to measure and record it every day. I have a situation where my blood pressure measured in the hospital is always higher. My doctor said that I may also have "white coat hypertension". For me, it is more important to measure blood pressure at home, so I will record the blood pressure I usually measure at home and give it to the doctor for reference when I see a doctor.

How do you adjust your lifestyle?

1. Eating: First, don’t overeat; second, reduce the intake of sugar, oil, and salt; third, eat more fruits and vegetables.

2. Quit smoking and drinking : Sometimes work requires socializing, but try to control it

3. Regular work and rest : Staying up late can cause the body's regulatory function to become disordered, leading to increased blood pressure

4. Emotional stability : Emotional fluctuations and ups and downs can easily lead to high blood pressure

5. Exercise

My weight was originally overweight, and I also had problems such as fatty liver and elevated blood lipids. After three months of hard work, I lost 16 kilograms. I felt relieved, and many of my indicators were normal after rechecking.

What I want to say to other people with high blood pressure :

Health is the foundation of all good life.

There are still patients who are unaware of the potential harms of hypertension, and some patients still think that as long as they do not feel unwell, they will not take medicine. As a result, many patients eventually develop complications when they see a doctor.

I hope more people will pay attention to blood pressure from an earlier stage, lower blood pressure, and reduce the occurrence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular complications. I hope more people will have a healthy body and mind, and be a happy person.
