A female internet celebrity weighing 312 pounds died in a weight loss camp! For severely obese people, this weight loss method is more reliable than excessive exercise

Recently, the news that the 312-pound internet celebrity "Cuihua" died in a weight loss training camp sparked heated discussions among netizens.

According to her personal public information, she weighed 312 kilograms last year. She joined a weight loss training camp in September 2022 with the goal of losing 200 kilograms.

Cuihua posts her training content on her personal video account every day. According to media reports, in addition to training during the day, "Cuihua" also broadcasts live in the evening and practices extra in front of her fans. She also cooperates with the training camp to shoot promotional videos.

Although Cuihua’s family later stated in the video account that “this matter has nothing to do with the training camp,” many netizens still have doubts, wondering whether it is related to high-intensity training and rapid weight loss in a short period of time?

Shan Yuqiang, chief physician of the Weight Loss and Metabolism Center of the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery of Hangzhou First People's Hospital , said that based on the currently available information, Cuihua's BMI index was about 60, which was considered a super obese patient. Obesity can cause a series of health risks, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, respiratory disease, vascular problems, etc., which may be the cause of the patient's sudden death.

Especially for those who train with high intensity like Cuihua, the heart will be under great burden.

"The heart of an obese person is already under a heavy load. If they exercise excessively, it's like a small horse pulling a heavy cart. It's beyond the heart's tolerance and can easily lead to sudden death. Sometimes the chance of rescue may only be a few minutes."

Shan Yuqiang said that some weight loss camps like the one Cuihua attended may lack professional medical support. It is also very dangerous for obese patients to develop symptoms such as dehydration, fainting, and arrhythmia during exercise and do not receive timely and correct treatment.

"Moreover, for extremely obese patients like Cuihua with a BMI of over 50, the effects of weight loss through exercise, dieting, etc. are currently quite limited."

Shan Yuqiang once treated a father and son who both weighed over 200 kilograms and had a BMI index of over 40. They successfully lost weight through gastrectomy and have not gained any weight back so far. Their physical condition is much better than before.

When many people hear the word "gastric resection", their first reaction is "risky", but in fact, for some obese patients, gastric resection may be safer than high-intensity exercise.

Gastrectomy requires joint evaluation by multiple doctors to determine whether the patient meets the surgical indications. Generally speaking, when the body mass index (BMI) is ≥ 37.5, active surgery is recommended; when the body mass index (BMI) is 32.5 ≤ BMI < 37.5, surgery can be considered; when the body mass index (BMI) is 27.5 ≤ BMI < 32.5, surgery can be considered after comprehensive evaluation if the patient meets at least two of the following criteria: metabolic syndrome components (such as diabetes, hyperuricemia, etc.); or comorbidities (such as sleep apnea syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome, etc.).

The evaluation before weight loss surgery is very strict, including: 1. Multi-dimensional indicators to measure the degree of obesity; 2. Assessment of obesity-related comorbidities and mental and psychological status; 3. Assessment of nutritional status. Surgery will only be considered after confirming that there are no contraindications and ensuring the safety of the patient.

"For patients weighing more than 300 kilograms, the surgical plan may be more complicated. In addition to sleeve gastrectomy, a combined duodenal jejunal switch (SG+DJB) can also be performed to reconstruct the digestive tract, which can better reduce weight and lower blood sugar and lipids." Shan Yuqiang said that after gastrectomy, food intake is greatly reduced, and the secretion of hunger hormones will also be reduced, which can quickly provide a sense of fullness, reduce appetite, and achieve the goal of weight loss.

Generally speaking, within one and a half to two years after surgery, the weight will gradually drop to a balance point. Depending on the patient's initial weight, about 50%-80% of excess weight can be lost. Regular review and follow-up at the weight loss and metabolic clinic must be adhered to. After surgery, it is important to control diet according to the doctor's nutrition plan and maintain good living habits and exercise habits.
