Pregnant women with positive ketone bodies

When pregnant women are examined and ketone bodies are found to be positive, many pregnant women do not understand this very well. When this happens, it means that ketone bodies are accumulated in the body, which often leads to a decline in the physical fitness of pregnant women, and even some more serious consequences. For example, diabetic poisoning can easily lead to such manifestations. Let's take a look at this aspect below.

Pregnant women with positive ketone bodies

Urine ketone bodies are intermediate products of fat metabolism in the body. Under normal circumstances, they are produced in very small amounts. Generally, urine ketone bodies will be positive after severe vomiting, diarrhea, long-term malnutrition, hunger, and strenuous exercise. When the body cannot use glucose as an energy source, it will use fat decomposition to produce energy. At this time, an acidic substance called ketone bodies will appear. If ketone bodies accumulate too much in the body, it will cause serious consequences, even coma. In some diseases such as diabetic acidosis, strong positive urine will appear. It is recommended that you go to the hospital for further examination to clarify the cause of positive ketone bodies.

Why do urine ketone bodies 2+ appear?

1. Diabetic ketoacidosis: Ketosis is caused by reduced sugar utilization and increased production of ketone bodies from fat decomposition. Urine ketone testing is extremely valuable when acidosis or coma occurs in patients with uncontrolled or inadequately treated diabetes. It should be distinguished from hypoglycemia, lactic acidosis due to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, or hyperglycemia and hyperosmolarity diabetic coma. Urine ketone bodies are positive in ketoacidosis, while in the latter, urine ketone bodies generally do not increase. However, it should be noted that when the renal function of patients with diabetic ketoacidosis is severely damaged and the renal threshold is increased, urine ketone bodies may also decrease or even disappear completely.

2. Non-diabetic ketosis: Ketonuria may occur during the fever period of infectious diseases such as pneumonia, typhoid fever, sepsis, tuberculosis, severe diarrhea, vomiting, hunger, long-term fasting, and after general anesthesia. This situation is quite common. Pregnant women often experience ketoacidosis and ketonuria due to pregnancy reactions, vomiting, and eating less, which leads to a decrease in body fat and a significant increase in metabolism.

3. Poisoning: such as chloroform, ether anesthesia, phosphorus poisoning, etc.

4. Taking biguanide hypoglycemic drugs: such as Jiangtangling, because the drugs have the effect of inhibiting cellular respiration, blood sugar may be lowered but ketonuria may be positive.
