Can pregnant women with colds take glucose tolerance tests?

Can pregnant women with colds take glucose tolerance tests?

I believe many pregnant women are not aware of the surgical examination method of glucose tolerance. This surgical method is used to check diabetes, and pregnant women should understand it. Diabetes is a common condition during pregnancy and can seriously affect the health of the fetus, requiring timely treatment by pregnant women. Pregnant women cannot do glucose tolerance test when they have a cold, as it will affect the results of Down syndrome screening. They also cannot eat too many sweets, as the results will also be affected.

Does a cold affect the sugar screening?

Colds affect sugar screening, so it is not advisable to do sugar screening during a cold. The precautions for sugar screening are:

1. Reduce the intake of starch (pasta) and sugar two weeks before the examination. Eat as little staple food as possible, and the amount of staple food for each meal should be less than 2 taels (that is, eat less pasta, and the amount of staple food such as rice and flour should not exceed half a catty a day). It is best not to drink rice porridge in the morning, you can use milk instead.

Avoid eating high-fat foods and try not to eat sugary foods. Sugary foods here refer to sweets, beverages, and even fruits that contain refined sugar and can be directly absorbed by the human body without any conversion, such as chocolate, cola, lychees, sugar cane, large amounts of watermelon, etc.

The amount of fruit you eat should be limited, especially those with high sugar content (you can switch to fruits like kiwi, cucumber, tomato, etc. which are not high in sugar. Eat them between meals). Don't eat eggs for dinner.

Eat more vegetables, no less than 500 grams per day, to supplement vitamins and fiber. Drink plenty of water and exercise moderately. Take a walk after meals to burn off excess sugar.

2. The day before the sugar screening or glucose tolerance test, it is best to eat light vegetarian food and eat less rice. Make stir-fried bitter melon to lower blood sugar.

3. Do not eat after 8 pm the night before and drink less water.

4. Don’t drink powdered sugar too fast. Drink it slowly, little by little. Don’t drink it all in one gulp. Drink it within 3-5 minutes. It is best to walk more after drinking, so that the energy will be consumed within an hour, which will help lower blood sugar levels.

5. Master the time for blood drawing. It should be one hour after you finish drinking. If you start drinking at 7:10 and finish at 7:20, you have to draw the blood again at 8:20.

What is the normal value of sugar screening?

In the morning on an empty stomach, dissolve 50 grams of glucose in 250 ml of water and take it once, then measure blood sugar after 1 hour. For those with blood glucose values ≥7.8mmol/L, an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is performed to confirm the diagnosis. That is, 100 grams of glucose is dissolved in 300ml of water and the patient drinks it within 5 minutes. The test results are based on the venous blood test. According to the diagnostic criteria recommended by the National Diabetes Data Group (NDDG) of the United States, fasting blood glucose is 5.8mmol/L, 1-hour blood glucose is 10.6mmol/L, 2-hour blood glucose is 9.2mmol/L, and 3-hour blood glucose is 8.1mmol/L. If two or more of the values are greater than or equal to the above standards, GDM is diagnosed. If any of the four values of the OGTT diagnostic criteria reaches or exceeds the abnormal value, impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) can be diagnosed.

For people with high risk factors for diabetes, such as a family history of diabetes, a body mass index greater than 24, a history of hypertension, a history of GDM in a previous pregnancy, and the delivery of a macrosomia, pregnant women should undergo sugar screening at the initial visit, and the screening can be repeated once at 30 to 32 weeks of pregnancy.
