Can I use Fengyoujing during breastfeeding?

During breastfeeding, special care should be taken when using any items and supplies, because sometimes if they are not used properly, it will invisibly cause adverse effects on the baby's health. Many mothers are confused about whether they can use Fengyoujing during breastfeeding. In fact, it is not suitable to use Fengyoujing during breastfeeding, and pregnant women, newborns, etc. are all prohibited from using Fengyoujing.

1. Fengyoujing is forbidden to be used in pregnant women, postpartum women and newborns, as well as those with burns of more than 2 degrees, skin damage and ulcers. Avoid using Fengyoujing on the eyes and vulva to avoid discomfort. If rash or itching occurs after external application, the product should be discontinued.

2. One of the main ingredients of Fengyoujing is menthol, which is extracted from the leaves and stems of mint. It is a white crystal with the molecular formula C10H20O. It is the main ingredient in mint and peppermint essential oils. In the world, China and Brazil are the main natural mint producers, and the annual output of mint oil reaches 2000-3000t. It is used as a stimulant in medicine, acting on the skin or mucous membranes, having a cooling and antipruritic effect. It can be taken internally as a carminative, for headaches and inflammation of the nose, pharynx and throat.

3. Therefore, Fengyoujing and other medicinal oils should not be used by children, including babies. Because the menthol in the medicated oil can reduce the amount of milk secreted by mothers, and the breast milk is also irritating, it is not suitable for babies to drink it. In addition, camphor can penetrate into the baby's blood through the baby's skin, causing damage to red blood cells, easily causing jaundice in the baby, and impairing the baby's brain function.

4. In short, when breastfeeding women take medications, they often only focus on whether the medications affect milk secretion, and rarely consider the effects of the medications on the baby, or they simply don’t know which medications have effects on the baby. In fact, many drugs can enter the baby's body through the mother's breast milk and have effects on the baby. Although the concentrations of some drugs entering breast milk are very low, they can still cause great harm to the tender bodies of infants.
