What are the risks of ectopic pregnancy?

Generally speaking, after a woman's ovaries release an egg, it will combine with sperm in the fallopian tube to form a fertilized egg, which is then transferred to the uterus for normal embryonic development. Ectopic pregnancy is an abnormal development outside the uterus, so what are the risks?

Clinically, more than 90% of ectopic pregnancies occur in the fallopian tube, also known as tubal pregnancy, and a few can also be seen in the ovaries, cervix, etc. Such a fertilized egg not only cannot develop into a normal fetus, but also poses a danger like a time bomb, causing fallopian tube rupture and heavy bleeding, threatening the mother's life. The main causes of tubal pregnancy are as follows.

1. Chronic salpingitis. Adhesions occur in the mucosal folds inside the fallopian tube wall, causing the uterine cavity to narrow. At the same time, due to inflammation and lesions, mucosal ciliary defects occur and the peristalsis of the smooth muscle of the tube wall is weakened, making it difficult for the fertilized egg to reach the uterine cavity.

2. Hypoplasia of the fallopian tube. Pathologies such as hypoplastic fallopian tube muscle layer and lack of cilia in the endometrium reduce the function of the fallopian tube in transporting the fertilized egg.

3. Pelvic tumor. Due to the squeezing and traction of the tumor, the position of the uterus or fallopian tube moves, the shape changes, and even structural abnormalities occur, affecting the normal arrival of the fertilized egg in the uterine cavity.

4. The fertilized egg migrates out. After the fertilized egg is fertilized in one fallopian tube, it can swim along the fimbria to the opposite fallopian tube. Due to the extended time, it has the ability to implant before it reaches the uterine cavity, resulting in an ectopic pregnancy.

5. Endometriosis. Endometriosis may cause damaged tissue in the fallopian tubes, which may hinder the fertilized egg from reaching the uterine cavity smoothly.

Ectopic pregnancies can mostly be prevented by taking safe and effective contraceptive measures, avoiding unclean sexual life, and promptly treating gynecological diseases such as pelvic inflammatory disease and uterine fibroids. It should be noted that if women of childbearing age experience symptoms such as vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain, diarrhea, shock, etc., they must be alert to ectopic pregnancy and go to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment in time to minimize the risk.
