CIRP: iPhone users’ replacement cycle is getting longer and longer, with 71% of users using their phones for more than 2 years

The latest report from CIRP, a research organization, shows that as the replacement cycle slows down, Apple users are holding on to their devices for longer and longer periods of time. The report states that in the past 12 months, at least 71% of iPhone users and 68% of Mac users said that they had used their old devices for more than two years.

The latest report released by CIRP, a research organization, shows that as the replacement cycle slows down, Apple users are holding on to their devices for longer and longer periods of time. The report states that in the past 12 months, at least 71% of iPhone users and 68% of Mac users said that they have used their old devices for more than two years.

Why did this happen? The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic affected consumer behavior. For example, the surge in demand for remote work and online education in the early stages, coupled with the subsequent economic uncertainty, caused a large number of consumers to become more cautious about changing their phones. They prefer to continue using existing devices rather than buying new ones.

In addition, the "toothpaste squeezing" of new machines, the improvement of equipment durability and reliability, and the changes in user needs have all lengthened the replacement cycle.

It is worth mentioning that research firm TechInsights predicts that the global smartphone replacement cycle will continue to lengthen to the longest in history in 2023. Chinese consumers will replace their phones more frequently, but it will also exceed 40 months.

The speed at which users change their phones has slowed down, which will make the already fierce market competition even more intense. The hot sales of Apple also show a change in people's consumption concepts. They need a phone that can be used for a longer time, rather than a phone that can be replaced faster.

Experts also bluntly stated that people originally buy mobile phones with the expectation of using them for three to four years or even longer, so they will pay more attention to whether the mobile phone is easy to use and durable enough, and are willing to pay a higher price for it. Therefore, in this context, many people choose Apple rather than Android (updates too quickly, prices drop too quickly, etc.) .

In an increasingly saturated market, mobile phone manufacturers are also trying their best to make their products better and sell them at higher prices in order to gain more profits.

The result of consumers and manufacturers "running in both directions" is that consumers can no longer find reasons to change their phones, and the replacement cycle continues to lengthen.
