Branch: 2022 Australian Mobile App Report

Entertainment and shopping are the main battlefields

Entertainment and shopping accounted for more than half of app installs in Australia over the past year.

From new users to re-engagement

As new installs normalise and app engagement continues to grow, Australian app operators are in a period of market maturity where the challenge is shifting from user acquisition to user retention.

Two years into the pandemic, Australians look forward to returning to normal

As of June 28, 2022, a total of 60.2 million doses of vaccine have been administered nationwide.

20.1 million Australians have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

19.7 million Australians are fully vaccinated.

13.9 million Australians have received three or more doses.

The country’s high vaccination levels have steadily increased consumer mobility over the last year.

As of 28 June 2022, more than 95% of Australians aged 16 years and over are fully vaccinated and continue to receive vaccinations, including booster shots.

High vaccination levels and the easing of restrictions are driving Australians back to activities they engaged in before the pandemic.

Activities such as working from home and eating takeaway food have seen rapid growth since the start of the pandemic, and activities negatively impacted by the pandemic such as shopping in physical stores, visiting public areas, bars and restaurants have steadily improved, matching pre-pandemic levels as of April 2022.

Australians put COVID-19 behind them and haven't looked back on mobile app use

Despite a slight decline since the peak of the pandemic, smartphone penetration in Australia continues to remain high, well above pre-pandemic levels, at 94% in the first quarter of 2022.

The pandemic-induced increase in time spent on mobile devices also continues to trend upward. In the first quarter of 2022, the time spent on mobile devices reached 4.6 hours per day, 1 hour more than 2 years ago (+35%). The youngest age group (16-34 years old) continues to be the group that spends the most time on their phones, more than 3 hours a day. However, since the first quarter of 2021, the time spent on mobile devices has been steadily increasing for all age groups.
