WeChat’s monthly active accounts reached 938 million in 1Q17, while QQ’s number declined year-on-year

According to the data disclosed by Tencent in the first quarter of 2017, in terms of social platforms, the number of monthly active accounts of QQ reached 861 million, a decrease of 2% over the same period last year. The combined number of monthly active accounts of WeChat and WeChat reached 938 million, an increase of 23% over the same period last year. In the first quarter, the number of QQ users online at the same time reached 270 million, and the number of smartphone QQ users reached 680 million, both of which set new records.

According to data disclosed by Tencent, the number of users under the age of 21 who use QQ every day has increased by double digits year-on-year, indicating that QQ still attracts many young users. In order to attract these young users, QQ launched a personalized information product - QQ Views, which recommends personalized content to young QQ users based on their interest maps and big data analysis. At the same time, QQ has also enriched QQ's smart campus services, providing tools to support college student affairs management, assist schools in communicating with students, pay tuition fees, and publish work information.

The slowdown and decline in QQ user growth has also affected the performance of Qzone (QQ Space). Data shows that Qzone's monthly active users currently hover between 630 million and 650 million. In order to attract users, Qzone has also vigorously developed live broadcast and search applications to increase user stickiness.

Compared with the decline of QQ, WeChat is clearly ahead of the competition, and its every move has attracted much attention. In the first quarter, the number of monthly active WeChat accounts reached 938 million, a year-on-year increase of 23%.
